Brazil’s widely used digital payment platform PIX, which has transformed the country’s financial landscape, is now at the center of a trade dispute with the United States.
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has opened an investigation into Brazil’s trade practices, including its handling of digital payment services. In a report to Congress, the USTR claims PIX gives an unfair advantage to local businesses because it is operated and regulated by the Central Bank of Brazil.
U.S. officials argue that the system creates obstacles for American firms by charging network usage fees and withholding access to consumer data. The investigation marks growing tensions between Washington and Brasília over digital markets and financial regulation.
PIX, launched in 2020, has become a staple for millions of Brazilians, allowing instant transfers and payments without traditional banking costs. Despite U.S. criticism, Brazilian officials defend the platform as a public innovation that promotes financial inclusion.
